Gian Maria Pacifici is a clinical pharmacologist, he is born in 1944 in Lucca, Italy, achieved the PhD in Biological Sciences at the University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy, in 1971, and the PhD in Medical Sciences at the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden, in 1983. He held the permanent position of Professor of Pharmacology, Department of Pharmacology, Medical School, University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy from 1983 till 2014, and at present he is retired, but he works at home where he has the computer, the printer, and the scanner, his work is very productive, and his work deals with the effects, metabolism, and pharmacokinetics of drugs. In the Department of Pharmacology, Prof. Gian Maria Pacifici established a bank of human tissues containing specimens of human liver, intestinal mucosa, kidney, lung and brain and some of these specimens were freely given to pharmacologist to perform their studies. Prof. Pacifici has published 359 articles dealing with the clinical pharmacology of different drugs. His training in clinical pharmacology consists in: (1) Institute for Pharmacological Research Mario Negri, Laboratory of Clinical Pharmacology, Milan, Italy (1971-1974) followed by several training periods abroad: (2) Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital, London, UK (1978-1979), (3) Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden (1981-1984), (4) Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden (Summers 1985 and 1986), (5) Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Unit of Clinical Pharmacology, University of Liverpool, Liverpool, UK, (Summer 1987), (6) Department of Pharmacology, Unit of Clinical Pharmacology, Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, UK, (Summer 1988), (7), Department of Pharmacology, Unit of Clinical Pharmacology, The Mayo Clinic, The Mayo Foundation Rochester, Minnesota, USA (Summer 1989), and (8) Department of Pharmacology, University of Arizona, Arizona, Tucson USA (October 1993). Prof. Pacifici has been the Italian delegate at the European Communities (Brussels, Belgium) for three actions in the frame of “Corporation in the Field of Scientific and Technical Research” (COST), namely: (1) Predicting and managing variability in the kinetics and effects of drugs during their discovery, development and use (Action COST B1), (2) Modelling in drug development (Action COST B15), and (3) Physiologically based pharmaco-toxico-kinetics and dynamics (Action COST B25). Prof. Pacifici coordinated the Concerted Action entitled “Identification of early factors in the variability of drug metabolism in man” Biomed contract BMH1 CT94-1622 (European Commission, Brussels, Belgium). Prof. Pacifici is a member of the Editorial Board of more than 300 journals and Editor-in-Chief in 14 journals. Prof. Pacifici co-edited three books: (1) with Dr. Giovanni Nicola Fracchia edited the book entitled “Advances in Drug Metabolism in Man” published by the European Commission (Brussels, Belgium), DG XII - Science, Research and Development (EUR 154139 EN - ISBN 92-827-3982-1) in 1995. This book is a text-book of drug metabolism in man and was freely distributed by the European Commission (Brussels, Belgium) to all Departments of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology in the five continents, (2) with Prof. Olavi Pelkonen, Professor of Pharmacology, University of Oulu, Oulu, Finland, edited the book entitled “Interindividual Variability in Human Drug Metabolism”, published by Taylor & Francis, London, UK (ISBN 0-7484-0864-9; in 2001), (3) with Prof. Michel Coughtrie, Division of Pathology and Neuroscience, Ninewells Hospital and Medical, University of Dudeen, Dundee, Scotland, UK, edited the book entitled “Cytosolic Human Sulfotransferases”, published by Taylor & Francis-CRC, Boca Raton, FL, USA.
