Ngo, Huu Hao (Hao) is a Distinguished Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), where he serves as Deputy Director of the Centre for Technology in Water and Wastewater and Co-Director of the Joint Research Centre for Environmental Green Bioprocess at the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and IT (FEIT). He is also the Founder and Executive Coordinator of the Australasia Practical Net Zero Emissions Society (APZES). From 2021 to 2024, he served as President of the International Bioprocessing Association and currently holds the titles of Distinguished Fellow of the Association (D-FIBA) and Fellow of the International Water Association (FIWA). Hao’s research expertise lies in Environmental Biotechnology, with a strong focus on advanced biological waste and wastewater treatment, circular economy-driven green technologies (such as algae-based systems), resource recovery, bioenergy production, waste minimization, net-zero emissions strategies, membrane technologies, alternative water sources, and environmental impact assessment. He has been consistently recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Analytics (Web of Science), in the categories of Environment and Ecology, Biology, and Biochemistry (2022, 2021); Biology and Chemistry (2020); and Cross-Field (2019). According to SciVal Elsevier’s global rankings (2014–2023), Hao is ranked #2 in Waste Management and Disposal, #3 in Environmental Engineering, and #7 in Bioengineering. The AUSTRALIAN Scholar Rankings named him a national leader in 2 areas of Biotechnology andEnvironmental Science (2021, 2023), Environmental Science (2020), and Biotechnology (2019). Based on ScholarGPS world rankings for the past five years, he is highly ranked in several categories: #2 in wastewater, #6 in wastewater treatment, and #7 in bioreactors. He has authored more than 750 publications, including 16 books and 54 book chapters, with over 63,800 citations and an h-index of 122 (Google Scholar, May 2025). Hao is frequently invited to deliver plenary and keynote lectures at prestigious universities and major international conferences. Hao has extensive experience in editorial roles. He currently serves as Editor of Chemical EngineeringJournal and as Associate Editor for journals such as Journal of Water Process Engineering (Elsevier), Journal of Environmental Functional Materials (KeAi), Algae and Environment Journal (Scilight), and Journal of Earth and Environmental Sciences (Scilight).He was also Editor of Bioresources Technology (Elsevier) for more than 10 years. Additionally, he is also a member of the editorial boards of several leading international journals, including Bioresource Technology Reports (Elsevier), Environmental Science and Ecotechnology, and an Advisory Board Member of Water Cycle (KeAi).
