Dr. Debanik Roy has nearly 35 years of research experience in the domain of Robotics, Automation, Artificial Intelligence & Intelligent Manufacturing Systems. Dr. Roy is a gold-medalist, both at his Bachelor of Engineering as well as Master of Technology curricula. Dr. Roy received Bachelor of Engineering degree in Production Engg. from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India in 1990, securing the topmost position in order of merit. He obtained M.Tech. degree in 1993 from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India with specialization in Manufacturing Engg. & Robotics, topping the merit list. During 1993-1995, he was engaged with doctoral research in the field of robotics (tele-manipulation & remote control) and was awarded Doctorate degree from Jadavpur University in 1997. Dr. Roy joined Automation Division, Tata Steel, India after completion of Ph.D. work and was actively involved in robotics projects there. Dr. Roy was the principal technologist in realizing the maiden application of robotics in Indian steel industry (1995-1997). Thenafter, Dr. Roy joined Robotics Research Centre, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in 1998 as Research Faculty and did research-based work in the field of underwater robotics (partially funded by British Gas Company, U.K.). Since 1999, Dr. Roy has been associated with the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Govt. of India. He was with the Robotics division of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai from 1999 to 2008. Between Jan., 2009 to April, 2018, Dr. Roy headed the Engineering Science Advisory Committee of Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS), DAE. After successful completion of the tenure at BRNS, Dr. Roy took up new R&D responsibility at the Division of Remote Handling & Robotics, BARC since May, 2018 and presently Dr. Roy is leading a research group in in Robotic Gripper Technology in BARC as senior scientist. Dr. Roy is also serving as an adjunct Professor faculty of Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) since 2009. Dr. Roy was a senate member of PDPM Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design & Manufacturing- Jabalpur, India for 5 years (2016-2020). Dr. Roy is a Guest Professor at Mechanical Engg. Dept., Indian Institute of Technology-Gandhinagar, India since Feb, 2025. Besides, he is an Adjunct Professor at Symbiosis International University, Pune, India and visiting professor of SRM Institute of Science & Technology, Tamil Nadu and Aakar Group of Institutions, Nagpur, India. Dr. Roy holds the position of Research Advisor & Mentor for several institutes of repute, like Indian Institute of Technology-Indore, Indian Institute of Technology-Ropar, Indian Institute of Technology-Gandhinagar, National Institute of Technology-Jaipur, National Institute of Technology-Rourkela, Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design & Manufacture-Jabalpur, Indian Institute of Science Education & Research-Bhopal, CSIR-AMPRI-Bhopal, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham- Coimbatore, Shiv Nadar University, Greater Noida, Maharaja Agrasen University, Solan, Himachal Pradesh, JSPM RSCOE, Pune, Indian Institute of Information Technology-Nagpur & GLA University, Mathura, India.

Dr. Roy has attained many professional benchmarks, including best technical paper prizes at IEEE-sponsored international conferences, official appreciation for the outstanding doctoral thesis, membership of IEEE, honorary membership of technical committee on robotics of IASTED, Canada, membership of editorial board of international journals, overseas visiting professorship, professional excellence award from DAE, guest speakers at various international conferences and institutes of repute etc. He has been distinguished as a biographee in “Marquis Who’s Who in the World” in three successive editions, namely, 2007, 2008 & 2010 and also honoured by the International Biographical Centre, U.K. and American Biographical Institute, USA in 2012. He is actively associated as editorial board member of several peer-reviewed international journals in robotics & automation and computational mathematics. He is actively involved in various international conferences in robotics, serving as a member of the international programme as well as organizing committee(s). His research interest goes in the domain of robot grippers, gripper sensors, flexible manipulator, underwater robotics, tele-manipulation and web-mediated robotics. Dr. Roy has bagged five patents on innovative design of mechatronic systems, besides several approved applications. Since early research career, Dr. Roy has developed novel indigenous designs of robotic / mechatronic systems and also carried out complete indigenous prototypes of those. Dr. Roy served his duties successfully as the lead technocrat for the ambitious project of maiden application of robotics in Indian steel industry during 1995-1996. He has authored over 350 technical papers till date, published in referred journals, book chapters and conference proceedings. About two-third of the journal publications of Dr. Roy are single-authored, which clearly indicates the level of originality and subtle involvement of his scholastic brain. With an overall citation of 4273 in Google Scholar, Dr. Roy has an impressive attainment on research indices, like h-index of 20 and i10-index of 52 as on date. Dr. Roy has also authored three books on applications of robotics (published by Lambert®, Germany) and 15 book-chapters, published by Springer Nature, InTech®, Springer, Elsevier, IOP, Taylor & Francis & others, in the domains of flexible robot, mechatronic design, robotic gripper and sensor fusion. He is currently editing two volumes of research-book on Assistive Robotics (to be published by Taylor & Francis, USA). He has also first-authored 12 technical reports on the accomplishments of various robotic instrumentation & hardware in India and abroad. Dr. Roy is equally active in writing science / technology articles in popular science magazines as well as delivering talk in audio sessions on his achievements on technology front till date, aired periodically by All India Radio. Dr. Roy has guided several Ph.D. scholars and well as mentored many in the capacity of doctoral committee member. In October 2014, Dr. Roy received the DAE Award for Excellence in Science & Technology (as part of the Group Achievement Award) for his contribution made in DAE programmes till that date. Dr. Roy has been nominated as member of the Programme Advisory Committee (Civil & Mechanical Engineering) of the Science & Engineering Research Board of Department of Science & Technology (DST-SERB), Govt. of India in Nov., 2018. Subsequently, Dr. Roy has been nominated as Member of the Technical Advisory Committee of Gujarat State Council on Science & Technology (GUJCOST), Gujarat, India in March, 2019, followed by membership of the Task Force Committee on EMEQ, DST-SERB, Govt. of India in Dec., 2019. Dr. Roy has been nominated as member of the Project Review & Steering Group, Autonomous Last Mile Vehicle (ALIVE) Project under Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY), Govt. of India in May, 2020. Dr. Roy has been re-nominated as member of the Programme Advisory Committee of Mechanical, Manufacturing, Aerospace Engineering & Robotics of DST-SERB, Govt. of India in June, 2020. Dr. Roy has also been nominated as member of the selection committee of SERB-‘POWER’ scheme of project approval for women scientists & technologists of India in July, 2020 and ‘SERB-SUPRA’ scheme in November, 2021. Dr. Roy has been nominated as senior mentor & evaluator of ‘Toycathon’ and ‘Smart Hechathon’ events by Govt. of India since 2018 as well as “VAIBHAV” (Vaishwik Bharatiya Vaigyanik) Summit by Govt. of India in 2020. Since 2022, Dr. Roy is chairing the sub-committee on Robotics & Artificial Intelligence of the Technical Advisory Committee of GUJCOST, DST, Govt. of Gujarat. In January, 2023, Dr. Roy has been nominated as the Chairperson of the Technical Advisory Committee for “ROBOFEST 3.0” and onward for a period of 3 years (2023-2025) by Gujarat Council of Science & Technology, Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of Gujarat. In March 2024, Dr. Roy has been nominated as member (assessor) of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), India.

Dr. Roy and his research team at PDPM Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design & Manufacturing-Jabalpur have secured the first prize for innovating a novel process of Incremental Sheet Metal Forming at International Forming Technology Exhibition, “IMTEX Forming-2016” held at Bengaluru, India. Marquis Who’s Who in the World”, USA has conferred ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ to Dr. Roy in Nov., 2018 for his outstanding scholastic excellence in the field of robotics, automation & manufacturing.

Besides scheduled scholastic activities, Dr. Roy is actively engaged in prolific writing on science & technology in Bangla in ‘Jnan –o- Bijnan’ (ISSN: 2454-7727: published by Bangiya Bijnan Parishad, Kolkata, India) since 2020 and delivered several memorial lectures on Robotics in Bangla at multiple events, including broadcast by All India Radio.
