Prof. Kanno is a neurosurgeon specialized in central nervous system tumor surgery and researches of hereditary brain tumor disease and neuronal regeneration with stem cells. At present he is engaged in professor of neurosurgery at International University of Health and Welfare School of Medicine in Japan. The research on hereditary brain tumor disease, in particular von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL), has started since 1993, and the research on neural regeneration with stem cells has started since 1998. In 1994 he found that VHL gene is a causative gene of sporadic hemangioblastoma, and in 2000 he found that the von Hippel-Lindau disease gene plays an important role in neuronal differentiation of neural stem cells, and he is plugging away at the study on neuronal regeneration with stem cells. Recently, he reported BC-box motif peptide mediated neuronal differentiation in 2018.
