Teaching Experience:
Director of the Graduate Program of the University of Athens Chemistry Department, entitled “Polymer Science and its Applications” since August 2010. In this program, graduate students can apply for Master’s (18 months) and Ph.D. (3 years) degrees. Through this program, I will be able to select the best Master’s/PhD candidates for the project.
- Synthesis of model polymers (I<1.1) with complex macromolecular architectures, such as miktoarm stars, multiarm stars (up to 128 arms), cyclics, grafts, dendritic, and combs of conventional polymers such as polystyrene, polyisoprene, polybutadiene, poly(dimethyl siloxane), poly(ethylene oxide), poly(2-vinyl pyridine), by anionic polymerization.
- Synthesis of well-defined polypeptides, such as poly(γ-benzyl-L-glutamate), poly(L-lysine), poly(glutamic acid), poly(L-tyrosine), poly(L-glycine), poly(L-leucine), poly(L-proline), poly(L-histidine), by ring opening polymerization of N-carboxy anhydrides, using high vacuum techniques.
- Synthesis of well-defined hybrid-polypeptidic polymers in a wide variety of macromolecular architectures, combining the properties of the conventional properties with the 3D structures of polypeptides, such as α-helix and β-sheet.
- Investigation of the relationship between macromolecular architecture and the properties of polymeric materials using modern methods of Polymer Analysis and Characterization {Low Angle Laser Light Scattering (LALLS), Membrane Osmometry, Vapor Pressure Osmometry, Dynamic Light Scattering, Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC), SEC-UV analysis, NMR Spectroscopy, IR Spectroscopy, Refractometry, Circular Dichroism, Atomic Force Microscopy, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Thermogravimetric Analysis}.
- Investigation of the structure of complex aggregates using Small Angle Neutron Scattering.
- Investigation of the influence of polypeptide secondary structure on the properties of polypeptidic macromolecules and their self-assembly in solution and in bulk.
