Abstract
Objective: In the present study, the objective was to examine the gender difference in the relationship between post-graduate students’ stress and their mental health.
Methods: There were 336 post-graduate students (201 females) from 54 Chinese universities participated in this study. We measured their stress and mental health in a cross-sectional design.
Results: The results indicated that Chinese post-graduate students’ stress positively predicted their mental health. Furthermore, male students had higher levels of stress than girls in financial stress, stress from lover, interpersonal stress, and other stressors. In addition, the strength of the positive prediction of post-graduate students’ academic stress on mental health was significantly weeker for female students than for male students, while the strength of the positive prediction of other stressors on mental health was significantly stronger for female students than for male ones.
Conclusion: Our findings confirm that there are gender differences in the relationship between post-graduate students’ stress and their mental health.
