Abstract

Tropical Cyclones (TCs) in the Australian basin have relatively more erratic pathways than other parts of the world. About half the TCs generated in the basin make landfall, but the location of cyclogenesis appears to have a direct bearing on landfall outcome. As the human and economic toll of landfalling TCs are far more significant than the non-landfalling ones, this paper attempts to identify the distinguishing features that differentiate between the two and, develops a decision tree model that can predict whether a TC is likely or unlikely to make landfall. Furthermore, this study captures the statistical properties of landfalling tropical cyclones in the context of Australia, which are described in the framework of sub-basin characteristics, temporal and spatial movements from genesis to lysis, and descriptive parameters.
