Abstract
Planetary health emphasizes that the health of human civilization depends fundamentally on the stability of Earth's natural systems. While discussions surrounding planetary health have traditionally focused on medicine, ecology, environmental sciences, and public health, the contributions of electrical engineering have received comparatively less attention despite underpinning nearly every aspect of modern society. Reliable electricity enables healthcare delivery, clean water supply, sustainable agriculture, transportation, communication, industrial production, environmental monitoring, and disaster response. At the same time, electrical engineering has become central to addressing climate change through renewable energy technologies, smart power systems, energy-efficient infrastructure, and digital innovations that support sustainable development. This commentary discusses the expanding role of electrical engineering from the perspective of planetary health, highlighting how technological innovations contribute to climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and human well-being. It argues that electrical engineering should be recognized not merely as a technical discipline but as a critical driver of sustainable societies and global environmental stewardship. Strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration between engineers, environmental scientists, health professionals, and policymakers will be essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and safeguarding planetary health for future generations.
