Face Recognition Systems: A Comprehensive Review of Techniques, Applications, Challenges, and Future Trends

Abstract

Biometric systems are automated technologies that identify or verify individuals based on their unique physiological or behavioural characteristics, such as fingerprints, iris patterns, voice, gait, and facial features. Among these biometric modalities, face recognition has emerged as one of the most popular and widely adopted methods due to its non-invasive nature, ease of use, and capability for remote identification. Unlike other biometric techniques that require physical contact or specialized sensors, face recognition systems can operate using standard cameras, making them highly suitable for real-time applications.

The importance of face recognition has increased significantly with the growing demand for secure authentication and intelligent surveillance systems. Face recognition technology is now extensively used in access control, law enforcement, border security, attendance management, banking, healthcare, smart cities, and consumer electronics. Its ability to accurately identify individuals in large databases has made it a critical component of modern security infrastructure.

The development of face recognition systems has evolved considerably over the years. Early approaches relied on geometric measurements and handcrafted features extracted from facial images. Subsequently, statistical methods such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Eigenfaces, and Fisherfaces improved recognition performance. In recent years, advances in machine learning and deep learning, particularly Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), have revolutionized face recognition by enabling highly accurate and robust identification under varying conditions.

This review paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of face recognition systems, including traditional and modern techniques, commonly used datasets, performance evaluation metrics, practical applications, current challenges, and emerging research trends. The review highlights recent developments and identifies future directions for advancing face recognition technology.
