Dr. Benetti performed the world’s first off-pump coronary surgery in Argentina in 1978, introduced a surgical technique for fibrosed interventricular septum in 1990, and in 1994 carried out the first Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Artery Bypass (MIDCAB). He went on to perform the first minimally invasive mitral valve replacement using 3D visualization in 1996, describe aortic valve replacement via right anterior thoracotomy with 3D in 1997, and achieve the world’s first ambulatory coronary bypass through the xiphoid approach (MINI OPCAB) that same year. He has trained surgeons in 45 countries in off-pump techniques and holds 31 U.S. technology patents along with two method patents for MIDCAB and the xiphoid approach. Today, he continues his groundbreaking work at the Benetti Foundation in Rosario, advancing the field of cardiac surgery.
